1. What they're made from: Traditional crowns are made from either metal, all porcelain, or porcelain fused to a metal substructure. The OVC is made from a hybrid material. The benefit of the hybrid material is that it does no cause as much 'wear and tear' on the opposing tooth (that is the tooth that the crown chews against).
2. How many appointments are required: In most traditional crowns a mould is made of your tooth and then the crown is made in a laboratory. During this time (normally 2 weeks) you have a 'temporary crown'. The one visit crown no mould or temporary crown is necessary and the crown is fitted to your tooth at the same appointment!
3. No messy mould is required!

The OVC is a preformed heat strengthened hybrid cap. This strengthened cap is then moulded to your tooth with the same hybrid material.

The OVC is only for BACK TEETH. Sometimes the OVC will not be appropriate and a traditional crown will benefit your tooth more.
